Arbol

Arbol is a stairwell library.
Arbol draws the idea of a multidirectional ramification in space which is partially constraint due to its environment.
The original installation presents a bookcase made up of two Arbols. When branches (shelves) rotate, intersect and overlap, they define a multitude of spaces of varying dimensions, to be arranged in infinite combinations.
Arbol can be constructed with or without an existing staircase.

Arbol is built of a hollow mast in painted raw steel, pierced with slots distributed according to the total height of the mast. The slots allow the diffusion of LED lighting which can be incorporated inside the mast. Engraved circular steel plates are attached to the mast, which support and transmit the weight of the shelves and books. The elliptical shelves are in multiline Baubuche (beech laminated veneer lumber). They can be placed in two different ways on the steel plate, thus offering two planes whose position choices vary the appearance from branch to branch. Two slots are provided on the shelves to insert, if necessary, plates cut in the shape of a grinding wheel to hold the books.
